Johann Strese
Brief introduction about yourself
I work as a Project Director at the Housing Initiative for Eastern Europe (IWO e. V.). My main areas of activity are energy-efficient refurbishment of residential buildings and support of non-state actors in the housing sector in Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus and Central Asia.
I have a master’s degree in Geography, Spanish and Russian Studies. I am experienced in the design and implementation of multi-national projects, conferences, and capacity-building measures. Before joining IWO e. V., I worked at a German think tank and public policy consultancy on climate, environment, and development.
Which company/institution do you represent and what drives you in the company?
I work for the Housing Initiative for Eastern Europe (IWO e. V.), which promotes the energy-efficient refurbishment of multi-family buildings and reform processes in the housing sector in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. I am driven by the fact that these are very important issues and that our partners abroad or in Germany are working with great passion on solutions to make the building stock climate neutral.
What is your relation to the topic of climate protection?
Climate protection has many faces. Our goal is to make multi-family buildings more energy-efficient and thus save CO2. In Germany, approximately every fourth flat is in a HOA, and in Eastern Europe, where we have been active for 20 years, this proportion is even higher. In order to achieve effective climate protection, we must help HOAs to modernize their buildings in terms of energy efficiency.
Why is the project important from your point of view?
High energy prices and inefficient housing are a risk for many people and society as a whole.
What is your role at GREEN Home?
Using the IWO networks, I am managing the Good Practice and Lessons Learned from national and international projects.
In one sentence: your motivation for working at GREEN Home
Across Europe, HOAs are facing similar challenges, through the international exchange of “good practices” we can develop creative solutions for German HOAs.
